Biography

Mastawesha Misganaw Engdaw is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Graz since November 2018. Prior to joining the University of Graz, he had been a Researcher and Lecturer at Jimma University, where he started his academic career, in Ethiopia. He also contributed to coordinating research projects. Mastawesha’s academic background covers Geo-information Science and Earth Observation, Water Resources Management and Hydrology, and multiple aspects of Climate Change.

Aiming to improve scientific understanding of the changing climate, provide policy-relevant inputs for accelerated climate actions, and enhance the resilience of vulnerable communities, his research activities focus on assessing spatiotemporal changes in the hydrological cycle, water resources management, climate risk assessment, and quantifying humans’ contribution to high-impact climate/hydrological extreme events particularly droughts, heatwaves, floods, and heavy precipitation.

Mastawesha is an affiliated member of the World Climate Research Program’s Safe Landing Climates Lighthouse Activity for two themes: “Water Resources” and “Understanding High-risk Events”. He is also a member of different professional societies. After graduating with his BSc in Natural Resources Management at Jimma University, he studied MSc in Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation for Water Resources and Environmental Management at ITC, University of Twente, Netherlands. In Addition to that, Mastawesha holds MSc in Climate Change from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark.
