Biography
Dr. Petro Elia Campana received his Bachelor and Master degrees in environmental engineering with special focus on renewable energy and water resources management from the University of Perugia in Italy.
In 2014, he was research assistant at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Austria to study the water-food-energy (WFE) nexus aspects of integrating solar irrigation systems for halting grassland desertification in China.
In 2015, he received his PhD in energy and environmental engineering from Mälardalen University, Sweden. His doctoral thesis was on the WFE simulation and optimization of solar irrigation systems for agricultural applications in China.
From 2015 until 2019, he was research assistant professor at Mälardalen University. During 2017-2019, he split his time between Mälardalen University and KTH - Royal Institute of Technology. In this period, he has been collaborating with researchers from University of Maryland, NASA GSFC and NASA ARC to develop a gridded optimization model to study the WFE nexus aspects related to irrigation during drought in Nebraska. He have been using the same model to develop an irrigation management system for the entire Sweden, the SWEDish Irrigation Management System (SWEDIMS) with the support of scientists from NASA ARC, Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, and Uppsala University.
Since 2016 he is Assistant Editor of the Elsevier Journal Applied Energy (IF: 8.848). He is author of more than 70 publications in books, chapters in books, peer-reviewed journal papers (1 in Nature Energy), and conference papers.
Since 2020 is Associate Professor (Docent) at Mälardalen University where he also teaches WFE nexus in the context of international energy conversion systems.
Mr Campania also is co-chair of the CoP on Earth observation for water energy food nexus under GEO since 2020.
