United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (1994)

Combating desertification is essential to ensuring the long-term productivity of inhabited drylands. Desertification is the degradation of land in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas. It is caused primarily by human activities and climatic variations. The UN Convention aims to promote effective action through innovative local programmes and supportive international partnerships. The Convention reaffirms the right of the parties to pursue their own development and environmental policies and acknowledges the need to take appropriate action against desertification and drought (United Nations Publication, 2013).
