About University of Salzburg Department of Geoinformatics Z_GIS

The Department of Geoinformatics – Z_GIS at the University of Salzburg is a well established centre of competence in GIScience, active in research and education in collaboration with academic and industry partners from the geospatial sector. At the same time, our team of Geoinformatics specialists contribute their skills and expertise to study programmes and research at Salzburg University as well as a range of international partner organisations.

The department is divided into the following divisions:

  • Applied Geoinformatics
  • Earth Observation
  • Geocommunication, and
  • Transfer.

Independently of this, research at the department is organised in dynamic ‘Research Areas’. These are EO-Analytics – Geo-social Analytics – Risk, Hazard & Climate – Open Spatial Science – Landscape Lab – CDL gEOhum – Mobility Lab – Spatial Simulation. The seven research areas and the Christian Doppler laboratory represent the points of intersection between the core methodological and domain competencies. Within all research areas, both basic and applied research is carried out. Next to methodological developments and scientific achievements Z_GIS wants to contribute to a deeper understanding of the physical environment and the human society – and in particular the human-environment nexus.
