Wetlands are some of the most important habitats in the ecosystem, with the most diverse group of organisms. Wetlands are transition points between land and water. Due to pollution and climate change, our wetlands are diminishing at a geometric rate. There is an urgent need for restoration of these wetlands to encourage plant and animal diversity and ultimately ensure sustainability.
I have noticed personally that most of the swampy lands (wetlands) in the eastern part of Kogi state are diminishing very quickly. These wetlands are an important part of the ecosystem as they create balance and purification in the ecosystem, and they serve as a means of buffer for catchments from flood hazards.
The wetlands in the eastern part of Kogi state are mostly used for agriculture, as some crops are well suited to that type of water-logged soil. Recently (In the last 20 years, the wetlands have started to disappear at a geometric rate. This disappearance of wetlands probably due to climate change or pollution will prevent the attainment of SDGs 1,2,6,11,12,13,14,15.
Potential consequences if no action happens include:
- Loss of species diversity
- Threat to food security
- Lack of balance in the ecosystem
- Threat to water resources and life under water
