This year's World Water Day topic "Water for Peace" is directly related to drought, which can exacerbate or even trigger water conflicts. On the other side, the integrated management of droughts helps to build a foundation for peace. Therefore, as IDMP's contribution to the World Water Day, they are thrilled to announce the relaunch of their free online course, "Integrated Drought Management: Monitoring and Early Warning" which serves as a critical step towards fostering water security, resilience, and ultimately, global peace through proactive water resource management.
The online course is designed by the IDMP in partnership with Cap-Net, UNEP-DHI, World Meteorological Organization, Global Water Partnership, and the Volta Flood and Drought Management project.
This introductory course introduces the three pillars of integrated drought management: monitoring and early warning, vulnerability and impact assessment, and preparedness, mitigation, and response. Over four modules, participants will gain insights into the basics of these pillars, including definitions, life cycles, and common impacts of drought.
With a focus on monitoring and early warning, participants will explore the importance of data access in drought monitoring processes, learn about indicators and indices used to describe drought conditions and discover regional case studies to contextualize their learning. The course also provides access to tools and products for drought monitoring, forecasting, and impact assessment.
