Space4Women and Space4Water

This Space4Women and Space4Water feature aims to present unique and distinguished women contributing to a water secure world by researching space technologies, working on water management issues, engaging in science diplomacy, or allowing girls and young women to study and pursue a career in STEM fields.

By achieving water security, benefits will also be seen in SDG 5 – Gender equality, because of the pivotal role women and girls play in collecting and conserving water. They bear the responsibilities to collect water in many areas of the world where homes without water at premise are not an exception. It must be an aim of the global community to reduce the 200 million hours women spend annually to collect water. This will as well directly benefit health and poverty reduction.

“At the local level, gender-sensitive approaches are helping to improve the suitability, sustainability and reach of water and sanitation services by both focusing on and involving women in the facilities’ design, implementation and management. Embedding gender equity into policy at all levels will be crucial to achieving water and sanitation for all, which in turn will help advance many other parts of the SDG agenda, particularly education and work” (UN-Water, 2020).
