“The contributions of space-based technologies and applications to support sustainable development are well recognized. Protecting nature and biodiversity specifically is of major importance in that context, especially in a period when climate change, population expansion and increased levels of wildlife crime among other factors are putting a significant pressure on biodiversity and wildlife globally. Many space technology solutions exist to support the management of ecosystems and to assess or study biodiversity and wildlife, in addition of course to the growing use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for example. Earth Observations and satellite-based positioning but also satellite telecommunications are being used in various projects around the Globe.” (UNOOSA, 2019)

Call: Youth4Water Essay Competition 2022
The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), in collaboration with the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC), has launched the 2022 edition of the Space4Youth Essay Competition! Water scarcity is a major global challenge. Young people play a key role. UNOOSA and SGAC want to give a voice to and promote youth's ideas on the use of space for water resources management and aquatic ecosystem preservation.

Jiayun Huang
Intern United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs
Jiayun Huang was a master student at Imperial College London, specializing in ecological applications. She holds a bachelor's degree in Environmental Science. Her research includes a wide range of topics related to environmental monitoring, evaluation, and management using remote sensing technology. She has undergone professional training in field investigations and laboratory operations, and is able to integrate them with remote sensing technology in the research projects.

Mr Stuart Crane, has been a Programme Management Officer at the United Nations Environment Program and its Center for Water and Environment since 2017. Mr Crane has experience in international intergovernmental organizations since 2009 and dedicated large parts of his career to working on environmental issues such as energy, climate change and water. His professional background is in Environmental Quality and resource management, and he received his post graduate degree in International Development.
