2023

2nd Space4Water Stakeholder Meeting

The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and the Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water (PSIPW) jointly organized the 2nd Space4Water Stakeholder Meeting to keep Space4Water community members in an active exchange on technical knowledge and to strengthen Space4Water community and collaboration on addressing water-related challenges. The Meeting took place online from 11-12 May 2023.

1st Space4Water Stakeholder Meeting

The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and the Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water (PSIPW) jointly organized the 1st Space4Water Stakeholder Meeting to foster collaboration and knowlege exchange in the Space4Water community and defined community objectives. The Meeting took place at the Vienna International Centre, from 27-28 October 2022.

Participatory Workshop for Indigenous Women

The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) organized a workshop on the roles and responsibilities of Indigenous women related to water. The workshop provided a chance to learn about Indigenous relation to space, water and technology, to identify experienced water-related challenges and to start matching them with space-based solutions. The Meeting took place at the Vienna International Centre, on 26 October 2022.

United Nations / Ghana / PSIPW - 5th International Conference on the Use of Space Technology for Water Resources Management

The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and the Government of Ghana jointly organized a conference with the support of the Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water (PSIPW) to promote the use of space technology in water management to the benefit of developing countries. The Conference will be held in Accra, Ghana, from 10- 13 May 2022, hosted by the University of Energy and Natural Resources on behalf of the Government of Ghana.

50 Stakeholder Anniversary

As of January 2021 the Space4Water Portal has attracted 50 stakeholders. This is a major milestone. In the future, community building will be taken to the next level to allow for knowledge exchange, the identification of user needs and the establishment of joint commuity objectives.

Release of the Local Perspectives and Case Studies Feature

Local Perspectives address a specific water resource management or ecological issue in a certain locality. Local Perspectives will be collected, screened, and categorised by UNOOSA. Depending on the target audience of the call, some of the collected perspectives (detailed and clear descriptions/case studies with technical parameters to be provided) will be publicly shared on the Space4Water Portal so that solution providers can learn about user needs, others will be collected and published in a curated format, maybe with more user interaction possibilities than a traditional case study.

Partners sign an Agreement for six years

The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and the Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water (PSIPW) have renewed their long-standing agreement to promote the use of space-based technology for better water resource management for six years until 31 December 2026.

Release of the Meet a Young Professional Feature

Similar to the Meet a Professional Feature, this feature was released in September 2020 as a new section to the website, introduces young professionals by means of a profile including a biography, thematic focus of their work, links to projects and publications as well as contact details. Furthermore, UNOOSA interviews these young professionals to showcase what the young generation is capable of and what their wishes, fears and solutions related to water look like

Release of the Dataset Search Feature

In June UNOOSA released the dataset search feature. This feature was implemented in collaboration with the Group on Earth Observations. UNOOSA was the first actor to implement their newly released search widget for the Next GEOSS platform.

2019

Release of the Meet a Professional Feature

The Meet a Professional Feature was released in December as a new section to the website, at which professionals are featured by means of a profile including a biography, thematic focus of their work, links to projects and publications as well as contact details. UNOOSA interviews these distinguished professionals from all over the world to provide a more personal relation to the extraordinary contributions to space technologies and water sector, and to inspire other's for a career in this interesting field.

2018

Launch of the Space4Water Portal

during the 8th PSIPW Award Ceremony hosted at the United Nations Headquarters in New York the Space4Water Portal was officially launched. UNOOSA continues to improve the portal.

2016

Signing of the MoU and a Funding Agreement between UNOOSA and PSIPW

UNOOSA and PSIPW agreed to re-focus the water portal effort agreed to in 2008 to the more precise thematic of space solutions for water-related monitoring and management. The MoU signed enabled UNOOSA to recruit a dedicated staff member part-time for the Space for Water Portal development and for its continuing maintenance and content updates after the planned launch in late 2018.

2012

Official Presentation of the International Water Portal (first version) at the COPUOS Scientific and Technical Subcommittee

The International Water Portal was officially unveiled at the meeting of the COPUOS Scientific and Technical Subcommittee, which was held in Vienna Austria from 6-17 February 2012. Recommendations from the committee were sought for the improvement of the portal. These recommendations were subsequently implemented.

United Nations / Argentina 2nd International Conference on the Use of Space Technology for Water Management

Co-organized by UNOOSA, the Comision Nacional De Actividades Espaciales (CONAE) of Argentina and PSIPW.

2009

Committee for the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), enhanced cooperation

After preliminary investigations by the PSIPW team, the vision of the project was expanded to that of an interactive database for water researchers, water organizations, companies, and water professionals, which would have added networking functionality where water specialists could contact one another, exchange information, and add contributions to a searchable online water library. The goal of the new project would be to gather together all parties involved in the water issues in one place to enhance international cooperation, communication, and access to information. This new vision was presented by the PSIPW delegation at the following meeting of the Committee for the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS).

2008

United Nations / UNESCO / Saudi Arabia International Conference on the Use of Space Technology for Water Management, in Riyadh

Co-organized by UN-OOSA, UNESCO, Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water (PSIPW), and the King Abdulaziz Center for Science & Technology (KACST)

2007

First cooperation agreement between UNOOSA and PSIPW established

The informal agreement allowed for the development of the first version of an international water portal, and established the multi-year series of conferences co-organized by the parties to address space technologies for water management.
